Jan Greer and Michael Kokas started Upstate Farms in 1989 when they saw the opportunity to connect restaurants in NYC with the bounty of Hudson Valley farms. Thirty years later USF continues to deliver food grown on small family farms to many well-known NYC chefs. We distribute products from as many as forty farms and our network represents over a thousand acres of farmland throughout NYS.
In addition to our distribution service, we also grow herbs and vegetables, forage wild greens and mushrooms, make maple syrup and manage bee hives on our farm in Tivoli, NY.
The Farm Box was our quick response to the Corona Virus, brought on by the need of our fellow New Yorkers to get farm fresh vegetables without going shopping. We deliver a variety of fresh farm goods to safe pickup locations in Brooklyn neighborhoods and set up a ‘no contact pick up’ at our Tivoli farm for our upstate neighbors.
FARM BOX response to Covid
During the Winter months we have a generous supply of winter squash, cabbage, apples, pears, roots vegetables, including beets, turnips, carrots, parsnips, potatoes, celeriac, onions, garlic as well as greenhouse grown salad mixes and greens. When the days are too short and cloudy for greenhouse harvesting and the local fields are not in production we bring in fresh greens from family farms in the Carolinas and Florida (or from down south and across America).
Throughout the year we are able to provide a variety of award winning cheeses from the Hudson Valley and the Finger Lakes as well as Hudson Valley Fresh dairy, NY plant-based milks, honey, maple syrup, fresh milled Wild Hive Farm grains, local farm eggs, Hawthorne Valley goods, NY meats, cheeses and pastas, as well as Hudson Valley apples and fresh juices. Additionally, we now offer locally roasted nuts and coffee.
We thank you and appreciate your support. We love providing our community with fresh, sustainable food.
